Ethics

Does this not mean anything to anyone anymore?  Ok...maybe it's just a pet peeve of mine.  I'm talking to this other guy the I met on the internet on the phone.  We've been talking for probably about a week.  He seems really nice and normal and we've been emailing each other for about a month before that.  Well for some reason today, he hit that pet peeve spot of mine.  So there were 2 instances that really bothered me today.  First we were talking about work and he was asking me about how much I work...so I was telling him how I normally work 8-6 or 7.  He was thinking that was a lot and then I was telling him that the peek time (year end when the auditors come out), I worked from 8-10, 12 and 2 at times.  He was really amazed and kept repeating..."but you get Comp Time right?".  Damn how long has this guy been in the work force....how many companies actually give their employees Comp Time when they are on Salary?  Especially if you're an accountant!  It just makes me think of him as the Stereo Type of the Lazy Ass American who doesn't want to work and get everything for free.  Then we move on to talk about Car Accidents cause the Stupid IT Guy from my last entry got his car hit at lunch today.  We went to In and Out and he got his car hit...the guy obviously did not look when he reversed straight into his driver door while parked!  Anyways, that is besides the point.  So he goes on to tell me that he had a lady hit him in a parking lot in a similar manner except he was driving...well anyways, he said he went to the body shop and asked them to get him as much money as possible...what the hell?  And then he went and took the money (granted...it wasn't that much $1500) and didn't fix his car...he then goes on to tell me that he knows he can get it fixed for only $200.  Is that not ripping off the insurance company intentionally?  I'm sorry but to me...that's just not ethical.

My understanding is that that's how the insurance companies here work: you don't have to fix the car if you don't want to.

If you were driving a beater car (the kind that are left on the sides of the highways here with those fluorescent orange/green stickers on their windows/mirrors), and someone hit you, would you bother to fix your bucket of bolts?

You should clearly be compensated for the damage caused, because you've decreased the value of the car (and its appearance), so the insurance company is willing to help you with that. But it doesn't mean that you need to pour it back into a car that will never show the difference; essentially, you've just converted car damage into cash.

But then, I'm not the kind of guy you should be asking about ethics. :-D

Nah..I don't mind if they don't fix up their car...but I just think it's wrong to try to get the most ($1500)the insurance company will give you when you clearly know you can get it fixed for less ($200). But then again....I'm unethical on some things too...we all are in some sense. At least that's what I keep telling myself so that I can sleep at night.

Well, I'm really sensitive to insurance fraud since I deal with insurance companies nearly daily. I see people taking advantage of insurance co. in many different aspects and the insurance companies giving everyone a hard time. It's a vicious circle.

You won't complain so much when I make up muscle pains and joint pains so that you can "fix" them. (We'll split the proceeds, hahaha.)

And yes, we're all unethical in some way. Makes life interesting. Makes our personalities all spicy like that.

perhaps it's because I've just started my career, but people who rely heavily on their insurance seem to never get better, those who pay cash get better super fast (go figure). I don't want to see someone in my office B**ching about the same thing over and over again. If he wants to be there because he understands the importance of a healthy spine, hey common in, but 6 months and you're STILL whining? well, I guess I have bills to pay.

In University, I took a course on Business Ethics. Isn't that an oxymoron? - TUNA
