Ping
I learnt a new term today. Today, I was bored out of my mind and was iming with my friend. We're having this discussion about vacation and she states that she has to ping the lawyer about it. I'm sitting there going..."what the hell is ping?" She goes on to explain to me that it's used all over her office and it means to email, call, etc. That's a new one...at least to me. I ask around the people I'm working with and they only know of a computer term and don't think it's related to the one she is using...so strange how it's something used by her company and seems to be a common term to them yet I've never heard of it.

I believe the term ping actually comes from the submarine/u-boat days. You "ping" another ship, which sends basically a sound that sounds like "ping!" and it's a signal of acknowledgement, or yes/no, etc.
And, of course, the same idea with "ping" for computers: you're sending out a signal in search of another entity in that space, and hoping for a quick response of acknowledgement.
Like, "sup." between people.
ping is pretty commonly used by software people because its technical meaning. btw, you have a rather hostile commenter. s/he must be really bored if s/he comments on posts s/he finds uninteresting.
You have no idea how bored I am! You're right tho I am sooo bored that i comment on the blogs of people that are so bored that they blog about uninteresting things.
AND in no way do I mean to be hostile. Besides immediately after I enter those comments, she IM's me and says 'It was you again!'
