Subletting

I don't know if it's just me or if other people out there think that if you were to sublet your place to someone you would expect to have it returned to you the same as you left it. Meaning...when you return, there should no longer be items of theirs in your place, the apartment should be clean and things unmoved and unbroken. Is that not the norm these days?

Of course to my surprize, I open the door to my studio apartment in NYC and find a bike starring me in the face right in the entrance. Let me say now...my apartment is only 460sf. Anyways, fine, a bike, not so bad, so I walk in further (oh and this is all after I have flown red-eye and missed my connector flight in Toronto) to see some chairs, a desk and hamper. I look in my kitchen and look up on the cabinets and see cardboard boxes! I never like cardboard boxes showing in my apartment...anywhere. Just doesn't look right. So I decide to rest a bit first before anything else. When I've finished resting, I decide to unpack from my 3 months away from my apartment. I open my suitcase and start taking my clothes out to start hanging in the closet...but can I? NO!!! I open the closet to find more cardboard boxes, suitcases and a bunch of clothes hanging in my closet so of course there is no room for my clothes at all...so I decide to lay them out on the couch. I notice something under my couch and I look..yup...more stuff, and under my bed...more stuff. I decide to get some water to drink in the kitchen and realize the floor is gross. Where are my slippers!!! There is no way I'm walking around in bare feet on that. I realize then that the hardwood floors are the same. I look at the stove and yup...dirty. Now let's say, I know my apartment wasnt' the cleanest when I left it but it was more like it smelled like Dim Sum and not all this other stuff. I never even really cooked when I was there cause I knew I was leaving for 3 months. Then I open the fridge...and it's full...I open the freezer...and it's full! God...did this guy not move out at all?

So I finally call him...cause I can't take it anymore. "oh, I've moved out half my stuff already...I know it may not seem like it but I have" I don't know how that much stuff could have fit in my apartment. So he finally came by on Saturday to pick up some of his stuff. But there is still stuff there...I'm trying to be understanding cause he's studying for some exams right now but come on! It shouldn't be my problem. I'm trying to be nice...but sometimes it's hard.

So today, I finally looked under my bed to see if Dim Sum has left any surprises for me...what do i see...one of the supporting beams for my bed is bent! How is this possible? What could have been done that this would happen? Moving my bed maybe? I know my bed was moved the day I got back but I didn't think anything of it. Well, I'm jumping to conclusions...without seeing exactly what the damages are since I can't get to it to see and knowing if he knows anything about it. I sent him an email today so that I don't yell at him on the phone and told him I wanted to talk about it on the weekend when he comes to pick up the rest of his stuff.

Yesterday I was going to make rice, I open my nice rice cooker to find it all dirty and brown. What the heck did he make with my rice cooker...that's disguisting. My rice cooker should not be covered with brown stuff! God...makes me think about ever subletting every again!

OK Fuck that I say. I got mad reading your post cause i imagined myself in your position. I would bill him to have a cleaner clean out your place and repair broken shit or buy you a new bed. That is just ridiculous. Even if it was a friend of a friend or sibling or whatever, that is just plain wrong. Rude, disrespectful, WRONG!

WAIT I'm NOT DONE. Take pictures of all these little things for evidence. Even the rice cooker.

Jeez. go to his place and bend his bed frame, and pour brown stuff all over HIS rice cooker. (You decide what the brown stuff should be.)

He's got skillz; only the most talented can mess up a place that bad in 3 months.

Haha..thanks guys. It makes me feel better that I'm not over reacting...but I'm still trying not to be rude. I'll wait till he comes by on the weekend so I can talk to him about it...maybe I'll calm down by then.
