Blind Spot

I was in my friends car last weekend driving up to San Francisco. He had the this theory that I thought was so funny. Basically we were driving and he wanted to switch lanes so just as he was about to switch lanes he noticed that someone was in his blind spot. He then goes on to say that it's not very defensive driving when people drive in the blind spot of someone for too long. OK that makes sense. But then he goes on to say that those people deserve to be hit and that it is their fault if they get hit cause they are driving in someone's bling spot. What? I can't believe that his comments still shock the hell out of me.

I agree: it is rather stupid to be driving in someone's blind spot, that's for sure. But even so, they don't deserve to be hit. That's like saying everytime you forget something back at the apartment, you deserve to get locked out of it and slapped in the face, and have it burned down on you.

That (back to the blind spot driving) is why I always try to stay out of the blind spot, if I can; though sometimes in rush hour you can't avoid it. I vary my speed relative to theirs, or if I have to drive in that blind spot, I make sure I can edge up so that I know they can see me in their sideview mirror (because I can see them).

Usually, I move lanes anyhow, and people will tend to notice that movement more, so they're aware of me. Sometimes it helps to cut them off, as a subtle "notice me, please don't miss me if i drive in your blind spot and then smash my car up" note.

But I don't think I deserve to get hit -- your friend deserves to get hit. Or maybe just deserves for his car to break down on him, out of warranty. Ha. Karma.
